Gavin Pavinyama
Hello! My name is Gavin Pavinyama. I'm 29 years old and a member of the Hopi Tribe located in northern Arizona. I'm from the village of Kykotsmovi, my clan is tobacco (Pipwungwa). After I graduated high school, I received a NCCER certification in construction and started working in construction for about 6 years. I remodeled and built quite a few houses. Some of the houses I helped build were sustainable, post and beam, strawbale/earthen houses. These houses also are powered by solar and use some of the passive solar techniques to help heat and cool the house naturally. Some even have greenhouses and have a greywater system and storage tanks to collect rainwater from the roof. Being a part of these projects really sparked an interest in learning more about architecture, sustainable green building and permaculture. For the past 3 years I found myself at a standstill working odd jobs here and there. At the moment, I'm a caregiver taking care of my mother. I thought about what I really want to do for a living, and with the help of a few mentors and support from my mom I decided to take charge again and do the Codefy program. I’ve taken a coding class in high school and have been interested in computer science so figured I would try it out. I'm looking forward to learning more about coding and computer science. Also, I want to see how I can tie all my building and work experience with these new coding and computer skills and make a great career for myself to support my family and community!
